Project Description

Kylemore Abey

Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, Ireland, is a Benedictine monastery since 1920. It was built in 1860s as a gift from financier Mitchel  Henry to his wife Margaret. Its original purpose was residential as it was conceived as a spacious and sumptuous castle on the lake shore with a nearby garden surrounded with walls, which used advanced technologies for glasshouse heating system. It was a wonderful home to this couple and their nine children.

Unfortunately, in 1875 during a visit to Egypt Margaret fell ill and died. Her devastated husband decided to build a Neo-Gothic church with stained glass windows near their home in her memory.  He died in 1910. They are both burried in the mausoleum beside the church.
